Summer 2024 Financial Aid

Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

Students who applied for federal financial assistance for fall 2023 or spring 2024 semesters, have already completed the 2023-2024 FAFSA. Transfer students should be aware that financial aid does not transfer from other colleges. Financial aid is awarded separately at each college aid is requested from. If a student has already completed the 2023-2024 FAFSA with another college, he or she will need to go back into the FAFSA website and update the application listing SCC’s Title IV School code: 008304. They will also need to request that any outstanding financial aid awards for summer at the prior college be cancelled. Students cannot receive federal aid for the same semester at two colleges.

Awarding & Financial Aid Eligibility for Summer Aid

Students who have completed the FAFSA, submitted all required paperwork and enroll in summer courses will be reviewed by the Financial Aid Office for summer financial aid eligibility. Students will be awarded Pell Grant and/or Student Loans depending on each individual student’s eligibility. Financial aid status can be viewed online at My Maricopa. Students are able see outstanding documents needed, award information, messages, account summary information regarding charges and payments, and the current-year financial aid award.

Pell Grant Eligibility – Students may be eligible to receive funds for up to 150% of the student’s Pell Grant Scheduled Award for an award year. Students may have remaining Pell Grant eligibility for summer if:

• They are enrolled in at least half time (6 credits) in the summer semester by the Pell recalculation date
• Have Lifetime Pell Grant Eligibility remaining
• They are meeting all other eligibility requirements to receive financial aid
• They are meeting Satisfactory Academic Progress requirements

Direct Loan Eligibility – Maximum loan eligibility is based on the student’s grade level and dependency status. Students may have remaining Direct Loan eligibility for summer if:

• They have not already borrowed the maximum loan amount for the year
• They are meeting Satisfactory Academic Progress requirements
• They are enrolled in a minimum of 6 credit hours at SCC

Pell Recalculation Date

The Pell recalculation date for summer is May 30, 2024. A student must be registered for ALL summer courses (including late - start and consortium courses) by this date in order to have those courses considered for Pell Grant funding. If a student registers for courses after this date, those courses cannot be considered for Pell. For students on consortium, the consortium form must also be submitted to the SCC financial aid office by the recalculation date. Students applying for aid after the recalculation date will have their Pell Grant awarded based on the number of credit hours they are enrolled in on the day their FAFSA is received by the college.

Minimum Credit Requirements for Summer Financial Aid

Students who have completed the FAFSA, submitted all required paperwork and are enrolled in summer courses will be reviewed by the Financial Aid Office for summer financial aid eligibility. Dropped or withdrawn courses may result in a reduction or cancellation of summer awards or repayment of funds already disbursed. Summer cost of attendance and budget figures are based on the actual weeks of instruction that a student is in class. Summer aid recipients should contact the financial aid office and speak with a financial aid advisor prior to altering summer schedules.

Satisfactory Academic Progress

Students must meet the Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) standards in order to be eligible for financial aid. If a student is enrolled in spring 2024, SAP will be evaluated after spring semester grades post in late May. Any student who fails to meet the SAP standards will receive a message in their My Maricopa account Message Center. If a student is not meeting SAP, the summer financial aid awards will be cancelled. Students who do not meet SAP are responsible to pay all charges or set up a payment plan to avoid their classes being dropped for non-payment. Please refer to the SCC SAP Policy.

Student Loans

Eligibility for a student loan is dependent upon the summer cost of attendance/budget and the amount borrowed during the academic year. Summer budgets are based on the actual weeks of instruction that a student is in class. Students must be enrolled for a minimum of 6 credits at SCC to receive loan funds. First time, first year borrowers are subject to a 30 day delayed disbursement (30 day delayed students must also still be enrolled in courses at the time of disbursement, or will not qualify to receive the funds). All loans are disbursed in two equal amounts, one near the beginning of the loan period and one at the mid-point

Summer Aid Disbursement

A student’s account will reflect the charges due for the semester. Provided a student meets all of the qualifications to receive financial aid, any scholarship, grant, or loan funds awarded will be automatically credited to the account and applied to the amount due for the semester. Allowable charges paid by financial aid include: current semester tuition, fees, book charges and other educational related charges.

If the financial aid exceeds the SCC charges, the student will be refunded the difference by the Bursars office provided they meet all eligibility requirements. Summer financial aid will be disbursed no earlier than the end of the add/drop period for summer classes

Book Advances

Students awarded aid for the summer session may be eligible to receive a book advance. Eligible students are able to purchase books and supplies with their advances at the on - campus bookstore, neighborhood bookstores or online. See Book Advances for more information.
