The “IT” Girl—A Behind the Screen Look at Solving Crimes

“Catfish” is a financial crime committed over social media that uses technology clues to identify the criminal. The class will be involved in identifying different types of technologies used in criminal investigations through both PowerPoint and role-playing scenarios, which will lead them to identify the suspect.

Learn how to MODEL… that is, 3D model! SolidWorks is a 3D modeling program where you can create a virtual prototype of a design you would like to see come to life.

Delve into the world of AI and the immense opportunities that reside in that field. Participants will have the opportunity to make their own image classifier using a webcam or microphone to identify objects or speech.

This workshop will provide an overview of the use of AI in higher education and the best practices. Students will have direct practice with several AI tools including Google Gemini, ChatGPT, and Adobe Firefly.

Jill Sanborn Jill Sanborn is a geopolitical risk executive and strategic advisor who brings broad leadership and decades of national security experience to mission-driven organizations. Her expertise helps executive teams navigate today’s global risk environment.

Jill served nearly 24 years in the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) where she rose up through the ranks to become the Executive Assistant Director (EAD) of the National Security Branch. As EAD, Jill oversaw a global workforce and made sure the FBI executed its mission to protect and defend the United States from all national security threats. Jill represented the FBI on all national security matters, frequently engaged the National Security Council, testified before Congress, and was a member of the President’s Commission on Law Enforcement and the Administration of Justice.

Prior to her role as EAD, Jill served as the Assistant Director of the Counterterrorism Division where she oversaw thousands of terrorism investigations, disrupted multiple plots, responded to crisis events, and extradited numerous terrorism subjects to the U.S.

Jill also held a variety of leadership positions including serving as the Deputy Director of Law Enforcement at the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), leading the Los Angeles Joint Terrorism Task Force during the 2015 attack in San Bernardino, and the Special Agent in Charge for the FBI in Minnesota, North and South Dakota.

As a career-long advocate of the importance of partnerships, Jill routinely collaborated with colleagues across the law enforcement and intelligence communities, academia, and the private sector to create a network of community engagement. In recognition of Jill’s collaborative approach and exceptional service, she received the 2022 Meritorious Presidential Rank award, the CIA’s George H.W. Bush award, and a Department of Defense Joint Civilian Service Commendation award.

Madison Young
Hi! My name is Madison Young and I am a research and data analyst for the Tempe Police Department. I have a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and a master’s degree in criminology and crime analytics from Northern Arizona University. I am dedicated to enhancing community safety through data analysis. My role involves examining police data and creating live dashboards to identify patterns and trends, working hand in hand with detectives and officers to improve public safety. I also generate data-driven reports for anyone from city officials, such as the Tempe Mayor or the Chief of Police, to citizens of our community. I grew up wanting to be like Penelope Garcia from Criminal Minds and now I get to spend every day researching and explaining the how and why of crimes.

Ngan Pham
Ngan Pham is the Statewide Cybersecurity Program Manager with the Arizona Department of Homeland Security, where she leads the cybersecurity initiatives for the State and ensures protection against cyber threats and attacks. She manages a $30M budget, providing enterprise cybersecurity tools to state agencies, counties, cities, K-12 school districts, and tribal nations. She also launched the annual Girls in Cyber Summit, welcoming over 50 middle and high school girls across the State to the Arizona State Capitol to learn and get excited about cybersecurity and cyber careers.

Ngan was previously the Workforce Development Manager for IT and Cybersecurity at the Greater Phoenix Chamber Foundation, where she designed and implemented workforce development initiatives to help close the skills gap in tech. She also served as the regional partnership coordinator at Girls Who Code, launching free computer science clubs to close the gender gap in tech.

Ngan earned her Bachelor's in Business Administration and Education at the University of California, Berkeley, and a Master's in Higher Education at Arizona State University. In her spare time, she enjoys training and spending time with her rescue dog.

Brenda Newhouse is the Occupational Program Director for Digital Arts and Photography and a full-time faculty member in the Art Department at Mesa Community College, where she teaches graphic design and self-promotion classes. Brenda is a first-generation college graduate who started her academic career as a web design student at Mesa Community College in 1999. She eventually earned an AAS degree in Web Design from MCC. In 2004, she earned a BAS from ASU in Digital Media Management with an emphasis in web design. While pursuing her degrees, she formed Newhouse Studios, a boutique business focused on web design and online marketing for local small businesses. She believes education is the most efficient path to exploring and finding our talents, growing our confidence, and empowering ourselves to have our most fulfilling, meaningful lives possible.

Mike MacLean
My name is Mike MacLean from Advanced Technologies Consultants (ATC). I have been with ATC and in the business for 10 years, and love helping a variety of Educational and Training Programs! In my spare time I enjoy spending time with family, golfing and any water sport.

Janet "Terri" Smith
Janet "Terri" Smith has over 18 years of service at a local police department. For the last four years, she has been a Forensic Computer Examiner where she conducts forensic analysis on computers, mobile devices, video, and vehicles that are involved in criminal investigations. Since 2016, she has taught and developed course content for AJS, CIS, and ITS at PVCC. She recently completed her Master’s in Forensic Computing from the University College Dublin. Her teaching philosophy is to cultivate lifelong learners who are equipped with the skills, confidence, and compassion to thrive in an ever-evolving technological world.

Nancy Dedakia
With over 20 years of experience in the technology sector, I have worked across commercial, government, and healthcare industries, navigating the transformative impact of technology on traditional processes. My career includes extensive work in health care, where I’ve seen firsthand how technology reshapes patient care, data management, and regulatory compliance. I have over a decade of expertise in developing, enforcing, and auditing data usage controls, ensuring robust and compliant systems. As a professor of Computer Information Systems, I am committed to preparing students to tackle the challenges and opportunities presented by technology’s rapid evolution in various sectors.

Nichole Neal
Nichole Neal is a full-time residential faculty member and co-lead in the engineering department under the Division of Physical Sciences and Engineering at Chandler-Gilbert Community College (CGCC). She serves as the advisor for the Society of Women Engineers CGCC Affiliate, the first and only affiliate from an Arizona community college. Neal’s engineering career began in the automotive industry and ended in commercial development. Neal holds a B.S. in electrical engineering from GMI Engineering and Management Institute (now Kettering University) and an M.S. in manufacturing systems engineering from Kettering University.

Habib Matar 
Habib Matar is a professor at Chandler-Gilbert Community College in Arizona. He was one of the pioneers bringing Artificial Intelligence to first and second year higher education in the United States. He currently has been teaching for 5 years, but previously he worked at Intel as a Production Leader at the Ocotillo Campus. He has an immense passion for teaching beginner students about the subject of Artificial Intelligence and hopes to make the subject accessible for all.

Michelle Travleer, PhD 
Michelle Traveler, PhD is the Faculty Chair for Computer Technology at Rio Salado College. She holds a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Information Technology with a focus on Cloud Computing. Michelle was featured on Apple, Inc.'s Higher Education first website for her work with app development and diverse populations

Dan Combellick 
It has been my pleasure and privilege to be a full-time faculty member in the Computer Information Systems Department (CIS) since the Fall of 1991. In addition to teaching our introductory courses, I teach courses in our Networking and Cybersecurity programs of study. This includes industry certifications with CompTIA  A+, Network+, and Cisco's CCNA certification.

I earned my bachelor's degree from the College of Business at Arizona State University and my Masters degree in Educational Media and Computers from ASU as well.

I have three children, one son and two daughters—all three of whom have taken classes here at SCC at one time or another.

In addition to being a full-time faculty, I am also the Strategic Liaison for the Business and Information Systems Division here at SCC. If you have questions about our CIS classes, programs of study, certificates and degrees, please feel free to ask me for guidance.
