Many high school students want to know what their college experience will be like. For those wishing to pursue artistic movement as their area of study, A Day in the Life of an SCC Dancer helps provide many insights.
This free orientation allows high school juniors and seniors to experience what it’s like to be a Dance major. They join current Scottsdale Community College (SCC) Dance students for the day in technique classes, observe a dance company rehearsal, learn about the Dance degree programs and have their questions answered. (While geared toward high school students, the orientation event is open to anyone who wishes to learn more about the College’s Dance programs).
“Participating in 'A Day in the Life of an SCC Dancer' encouraged me to engage in a world of Dance that I wasn’t accustomed to yet, said Maili Monenerkit, who is currently enrolled in all three areas of Dance study at SCC. “The event challenged me in the best way possible, and it is what sparked my desire to attend SCC as a Dance major."
The Dance program at SCC is nationally recognized and award winning, providing a safe and encouraging environment. Classes are available for students of all ages and levels in various styles of dance. Students are trained using sound kinesiological practices to foster effective and efficient movement. The SCC Dance faculty are passionate experts in the field and have a strong desire to students attain their dancing goals.
SCC offers three programs:
- Associate in Arts, Fine Arts-Dance
- Associate in Applied Science, Dance Performance and Technology
- Dance Performance and Technology Certificate of Completion
The Dance Performance and Technology program is designed for students who plan to enter the field of dance as performers, choreographers, teachers, and multimedia technicians. The program provides classes in dance technique (Ballet, Modern, Jazz and Hip Hop), performance and production as well as training in multimedia production and the application of video and computer technology to dance. Students can pursue an Associate degree or Certificate of Completion.
Amanda Kinnaird is a dance teacher at Maryvale High School and has been attending the orientation event with her high school students each year for the 15 years. She says, "My students always say that this is one of their favorite events, as they leave with new inspiration and creative ideas for their ongoing work in the classroom. The instructors and students at SCC are gracious hosts and offer great insight for my high school dancers.”
