SCC’s Culinary Kids Camp Helps Train Future Chefs

Kids learning about cooking at SCC's culinary program.

The sound of giggling along with deep concentration emerges from the kitchens at Scottsdale Community College (SCC). It’s not the latest coeds, but kids 9-15 years old enrolled in the college’s wildly popular annual summer Culinary Kids Camp. Here, aspiring young culinarians create a series of made-from-scratch meals. Campers prep and produce items they can recreate at home with a strong focus on healthy cooking techniques and ingredients.

“One of the best ways to teach kids about eating right is to actually get them into the kitchen preparing healthy, delicious meals themselves,” said Mark Dow, SCC’s Culinary Arts program lead. “Having a fun, positive experience with healthy foods is important to setting kids up for choosing good nutrition throughout their life.”

SCC offers three skill levels for camp: beginner, intermediate and advanced. Parents can enroll their kids for one or all three for a summer of fun and food. Camp sessions are offered in morning and afternoon blocks. Camp classes are non- credit.

The registration cost is $225 per camper. Students receive a logo apron, chef’s hat, printed recipes and experience preparing food in a commercial setting. Each camp session is limited to 15 students.

All camp classes are held at SCC in the Applied Sciences Building, Culinary Arts Kitchen at 9000 E. Chaparral Road, Scottsdale, AZ 85256 (Use Entrance 4 and Park in Lot H).
