Namaste! Those looking for a peaceful and uplifting career in yoga instruction have an exciting opportunity to pursue through Scottsdale Community College (SCC). A new Certificate of Completion in Yoga Instruction gives yogis from across the Valley a chance to turn their passion into a career in just two semesters.
Through a partnership with Yoga Alliance, SCC’s Yoga Instruction program is a Registered Yoga School that offers a unique, high-quality education by skilled instructors set in a well- appointed facility. Students will be prepared to learn everything it takes to become a qualified yoga instructor from a curriculum that provides a foundation in yoga's theory, tradition, and practice. The coursework covers the principles of anatomy and biomechanics applied to yoga, instructional methodology in the art and science of teaching yoga asanas, and practical teaching experience. In addition, training prepares students to teach any yoga philosophy by learning the key areas of yoga instruction, such as principles of the breath, meditation, postural sequencing, observation, verbal and physical adjustments, use of voice, and organization of course curriculum.
After completing the program, graduates receive their certificate for completing a Hatha Yoga teacher training program, which they can use to register with Yoga Alliance as a 200-RYT (200 hours of training as a registered yoga teacher) – the industry standard to begin a career as a yoga instructor.
“I’ve met so many people who want to spread their love of yoga by teaching others,” says Karryn Allen, Division Director of the Health Sciences Division at SCC. “This program offers a fast, affordable, and comprehensive way to get certified and begin a new career – one that can be much more relaxing than a typical office job!”
At 19 credits, students can complete the program for $1,843 ($97 per credit hour for Maricopa county residents). Opportunities for a career in yoga instruction range from positions at commercial gyms and yoga studios to more entrepreneurial ventures, such as opening a school of their own.
This program is the only one of its kind in the Maricopa County Community College District. New cohorts begin every Fall semester, starting in 2023. Learn more about SCC’s Yoga Instruction Program.
