Movie: "Nailed It"

Tuesday, April 29, 2025  |  Artie's Lounge  |  12:00-1:00 PM

Visit any strip mall in the United States, and there's bound to be a Vietnamese nail salon. While ubiquitous in cities across the country, few Americans know the history behind the salons and the 20 Vietnamese refugee women, who in 1975 sparked a multibillion-dollar industry that supports their community to this day. Weaving powerful personal stories with insightful interviews, director Adele Free Pham captures an unforgettable and often hilarious saga born of tragedy, charting the rise, struggle, stereotypes, and steady hold Vietnamese Americans have on today's multiethnic $8 billion dollar nail economy. Light refreshments will be provided.

Bystander Intervention to Stop Anti-Asian/American and Xenophobic Harassment facilitated by Right to Be

Tuesday, May 20, 2025  |  Online  |  11:00 AM - 12:00 PM

Sponsored by the SCC Library

The one-hour, interactive training will teach you Right To Be’s 5Ds of bystander intervention methodology. We’ll start by talking about the types of disrespect that Asian and Asian Americans are facing right now—from microaggressions to violence—using a tool we call the “spectrum of disrespect.” You’ll learn what to look for and the positive impact that bystander intervention has on individuals and communities. We’ll talk through five strategies for intervention: distract, delegate, document, delay, and direct, and how to prioritize your own safety while intervening.
