Program Overview

Gain a deeper understanding of the world around you. Studying languages is not just about speaking a different languageā€”it also teaches the intercultural skills necessary to becoming a contributing member of our local and global community. Our program can prepare you for further university studies, travels abroad, transitions into the workforce, or advancement in your current career.

Students at any Maricopa Community College may need to complete courses at more than one of our colleges.

SCC Program Description

The "Associate in Arts, Emphasis in Japanese," as an Associate's degree program, is offered at the Mesa, Glendale, and Rio Salado campuses, but not at SCC.

Students who plan to follow a major pathway that requires two or four semesters of a second language at any state university can complete the language requirement at SCC  in person and online. Students working toward their pathway will earn the Associate of Arts, which prepares them for transfer to a four-year program.

The credits that are earned for Spanish will count as elective credits in the Associate of Arts degree so that students can earn anywhere from 4-16 credits of elective credit, depending on their proficiency placement. SPA 201 or 202 also fulfills the Global Awareness (G) requirement for the AA and ASU.

Students planning to major in Spanish can gain reading, speaking, and writing proficiency in the language and are exposed to the wide variety of cultures that exist in the Spanish-speaking world. They will be able to participate in study abroad programs within the Maricopa district to enhance their language learning and learn about other cultures.

Students who wish to major in Spanish earn the Associate of Arts, preparing them to transfer to a four-year program. If students follow the correct transfer path, they enter transfer partner universities as juniors. Courses are available in person (day and evening) and online.

Experiential Learning Opportunities
